AAP Caries Assessment Tool

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has developed an Oral Health Risk Assessment Tool for clinicians who care for children. This tool includes risk factors obtained via history and clinical evaluation. The risk indicators help to stratify children into low or high-risk for dental caries.

 
 
 
The AAP Oral Health Risk Assessment Tool helps clinicians determine if a child is at low or high risk.
 
A child's risk for developing decay is based on the highest level risk indicator.
 
High or moderate risk factors should be addressed through anticipatory guidance and education.
 
Children determined to be at high risk should be referred to a dentist.
