Oral health is an integral part of overall health and,
thus, is the responsibility of pediatricians. As part of providing a medical home, pediatricians are responsible for providing for the patient’s health care needs or for appropriately arranging care with other qualified professionals. Coordination of care for oral health requires a baseline level of knowledge to facilitate communication, referral, collaboration, and ongoing follow up and care. Finally, oral health issues are faced by a majority of children in the United States, so pediatricians must be aware of these issues and be competent in addressing them.
