Smiles for Life
The American Academy of Pediatrics has endorsed the child-focused modules of the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine Smiles for Life National Oral Health Curriculum. This curriculum is designed to educate primary care clinicians in the promotion of oral health for all age groups.
The Smiles for Life curriculum consists of seven 45-minute modules covering core areas of oral health relevant to medical clinicians. CME credit, including double credit based on evidence-based content for many modules, has been approved by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). User competencies are measured through assessments at course completion and reported to the AAFP for CME application. For each course a user must score an 80% or higher to receive CME credit. Pediatricians are able to self-report AAFP CME credit.
Oral Health Education Modules
This course addresses the prevalence, etiology, and consequences of early childhood caries. Clinicians will learn to assess risk factors, recognize the various stages of early childhood caries, and counsel patients on preventative techniques. This module will also discuss common oral developmental issues in children such as teething, eruption hematomas, and non-nutritive sucking. This course takes 1 hour to complete. If this training is completed it is not necessary to also take the Fluoride Varnish Module.
NOTE: This training is suitable to replace the former AAP Oral Health Risk Assessment 1-Hour Training that is no longer available. Participants will receive a certificate of completion from Smiles for Life for completion that can be submitted to Medicaid or other authorities for proof of training.
This course focuses on caries prevention. It offers a brief review of early childhood caries and addresses how the use of fluoride is part of a comprehensive approach to a child’s oral health. Specifically, clinicians will learn the benefits, appropriate safety precautions, and dosing for fluoride, as well as how to apply fluoride varnish and provide adequate follow-up care. If you have taken the Child Oral Health Module it is not necessary to take this course in addition. This course takes 1 hour to complete.
Smiles for Life offers several other modules targeted towards the adult population including the pregnant patient, oral to systemic health, acute dental problems, and others.
