Pentacel®Sanofi Pasteur is reporting a delay in the release of Pentacel® (Diphtheria and Tetanus Toxoids and Acellular Pertussis Adsorbed, Inactivated Poliovirus and Haemophilus b Conjugate [Tetanus Toxoid Conjugate] Vaccine), following a shortage of both Pentacel® and DAPTACEL® (Diphtheria and Tetanus Toxoids and Acellular Pertussis Vaccine Adsorbed) that began in April 2012.
Existing inventory of Pentacel® is only enough to fulfill allocations through mid April 2013, and a supply gap will exist through June 2013, when order allocations will be reinstated until ample inventory is built. Sanofi will likely begin lifting order allocations in both the public and private markets in September 2013.
Because sufficient quantities of DAPTACEL®, ActHIB®, and IPOL® are available, as are single and combination vaccines from other manufacturers, little to no impact to the routine childhood immunization schedule is anticipated. Please be aware, Pediarix® contains Hepatitis B vaccine but does not contain Hib vaccine. These differences in vaccine components will need to be understood in order to ensure that infants receive all of their necessary vaccine antigens.
