Joseph Lopreiato MD,MPH,FAAP is the assistant Dean for Simulation Education at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD.
A 24 year Navy veteran, CAPT Lopreiato is currently managing a 10,000 square foot facility conceived by Dr. Val Hemming, MD, FAAP and opened in April 1999. As Medical Director, Dr. Lopreiato oversees the use of simulation technology, such as standardized patients, human patient simulators, and virtual reality simulation to train medical students, nursing students, and residents in various clinical skills.
To date, the center has conducted over 27,000 simulations in its six year existence. The technology of simulation allows learners to practice medical and surgical skills in a safe environment and get valuable feedback. It allows medical educators to see what learners are doing when interacting with patients and plan changes in curricula to meet their educational needs. This is an exciting field of research and discovery and all are welcome to visit our facility for a tour and to discuss collaborations.
