AAP Provisional Section on Obesity (PSOOb)

Welcome to the Provisional Section on Obesity (PSOOb) Web site. The PSOOb was established as a provisional section in January 2011. Our current mission is to improve the health and well-being of children and families by reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity and promoting healthy active living. Our current leadership is comprised of general pediatricians and sub specialist volunteers. Click here to view the Executive Committee. For the year 2011, the Executive Committee will be planning to become a full fledge section. We welcome your feedback and participation throughout the process.  Please find our proposed mission, vision and goals listed below and scroll down further to see recent activities:

Mission: To improve the health and well-being of children and families by reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity and promoting healthy active living

Vision: To reverse the trend in childhood obesity:

  • Pediatricians are trained and supported with tools & resources to deliver high quality obesity prevention, assessment, and treatment
  • Pediatricians play a vital role when advocating for policy environmental and systems level change at the community, state, and federal levels
  • Families and communities are engaged in healthy active living and are supported by pediatricians in these choices.

Goals:

  • Provide pediatricians and other pediatric healthcare providers with the knowledge, skills and resources to address the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.
  • Support and facilitate adherence and implementation of current guidelines, and the development of future guidelines pertaining to pediatric obesity prevention and treatment.
  • Foster collaboration between pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists and surgical specialists, their healthcare community colleagues and other professional healthcare organizations and societies to maximally synergize and synchronize efforts to reverse the obesity epidemic.
  • Empower pediatricians to be leaders and voices advocating for societal and environmental changes to reduce the prevalence of obesity in all communities.
  • Be a resource for parents, families, and communities for information and strategies for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.


History: In March 2010 the PSOOb Executive Committee rallied support from multiple state AAP chapters and was able to get a resolution submitted to the 2010 AAP Annual Leadership Forum. It was then voted into the "Top 10 Resolutions" the #2 resolution that a Section on Obesity be formed.
