Translating an Effective Teen Driving Program for Parents to Primary Care
If you decide to participate in this study:
- Practices from the 14 states (CA, CT, FL, HI, IN, MA, MD, MT, NC, NJ, NY, PA, VA, VT, and UT) who will be participating in the study will be asked to review self study manuals that include: 1) facts about teen driving risks, 2) FAQ sheet to address commonly asked questions by parents; 3) brief motivational interviewing skills and how to use these skills to talk to parents about this issue; and 4) sample scripts to use when talking to parent/teen dyads. You will also be asked to listen to sample audio-tapes of practitioner encounters with families around this topic. We anticipate that reviewing the manual and listening to the audio-tapes will take approximately 30 minutes. You will be asked to go to a teen driving website and review the materials on the site. You will also be asked to practice delivering the brief intervention to 3 parents attending well-child and preventative visits, or ADHD medication check-ups. Upon completion of the PCP training tasks, you will be asked to complete a training certification form.
- You will be mailed a study implementation box containing the intervention materials. Intervention materials will include a button to wear which states “Ask me about teen driving”, a key chain with the URL of the Checkpoints Web Program and teen driving posters/materials to be displayed throughout the office as appropriate.
- Deliver a brief intervention to 35 parents of your teen patients attending well-child and preventative visits, or ADHD medication check-ups. The intervention will include verbally conveyed information about teen driving risk and an introduction to the Checkpoints Web Program, and a keychain that also has the URL of the Checkpoints Web Program printed on it.
- You will be asked to compete a short survey upon completion of the study. The follow up survey will solicit feedback from PCPs on how the implementation went and suggestions for improvements, We anticipate it will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. After completing the survey you will have the choice of mailing the survey to PROS at the AAP using a pre-addressed stamped envelope or faxing the survey to PROS at the AAP.
