Role and Scope of the Committee

Coordination
- To work with the Section of Emergency Medicine Subcommittee on Disaster to:
- Define essential skills/training that Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) physicians should have
- Assess and disseminate information on PEM fellowships’ provision of disaster preparedness training
- Define skills that prehospital providers should have when working with children in disasters
- To nationally coordinate communication between key stakeholders in EMS for children by:
- Establishing liaisons with other professional organizations such as, but not limited to, the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC), National Association of EMS Officials (NASEMSO), American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) EMS Committee, PEM Collaborative Research Committee (PEM-CRC), and the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN)
- Creating a list of potential mentors in EMS research
- To share information about the EMS subspecialty certification process, particularly with consideration of unique considerations for PEM applicants
Standards
- To identify standardized training resources and guides to share with prehospital providers, in coordination with existing resources on the EMSC National Resource Center (NRC) toolbox
- To raise awareness of EMS issues among American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) members by suggesting policy statement and informational paper topics to the Committee on Pediatric Emergency Medicine (COPEM)
Education
- To educate PEM physicians and pediatric trainees about EMS
- To coordinate creation of educational programming for the AAP National Convention and Exhibition (NCE) on EMS topics, in conjunction with the Committee on Transport Medicine
- To recommend recurring EMS topics for the national PEM Fellows’ Conference in coordination with state EMSC programs and local PEM fellowships
Research
- To encourage pediatric prehospital research by:
- Ongoing support of a competition/prize at the AAP SOEM meeting for EMS abstract presentations
- Designating an abstract reviewer for EMS abstracts for the AAP NCE
- Disseminating information about submission of pediatric EMS research to relevant meetings with a prehospital audience
