With the help of benevolent community conscious citizens and our legislators, the Center for Child Protection at Sunbury Community Hospital was started 2-3 years ago. The main thrust of the Center is to evaluate children via a videotaped psychosocial interview and via a physical examination as well as a colposcopic exam. We have not ventured into the therapeutic aspect of this problem.

The Child Safety Team provides a coordinated interdisciplinary approach to the care of children who may have been abused or neglected. As a regional trauma center, Penn State Hershey Medical Center is a major referral site in Central PA for children who have suffered serious physical abuse. The Child Safety Team works closely with other Pediatric subspecialties which have extensive experience in the treatment of abused children, research, and a dedication to prevention of child maltreatment. In addition to direct care of hospitalized or outpatient children, the Child Safety Team also plays a significant role in local child fatality review teams and county multi-disciplinary case reviews. Members of the faculty provide professional education for medical staff and students, hospital employees, and related agencies and disciplines. Community education is aimed at increasing awareness of child maltreatment, prevention of exposure to violence, and long term consequences of child maltreatment. For further information, contact Dr Andi Taroli, Director at the numbers above or: ataroli@hmc.psu.edu

Children's Advocacy Center was begun to alleviate the trauma to abused children of having to go from place to place) i.e. hospital, police station, child welfare etc.) and repeat themselves over and over. The CAC is set in a homely environment and the resources come to the child. Therapy is also available at the home through the local mental health system. Abuse education and coordination of services are part of the program also.
