The Child Protection Team provides a coordinated interdisciplinary approach to the care of children who may have been abused or neglected. As a regional trauma center, Penn State Hershey Medical Center is a major referral site in Central PA for children who have suffered serious physical abuse. The Child Protection Team works closely with other Pediatric subspecialties which have extensive experience in the treatment of abused children, research, and a dedication to prevention of child maltreatment. In addition to direct care of hospitalized or outpatient children, the Child Protection Team also plays a significant role in local child fatality review teams and county multi-disciplinary case reviews. Members of the faculty provide professional education for medical staff and students, hospital employees, and related agencies and disciplines. We also have a clinic providing a medical home to children in out of home placement and a comprehensive mental health clinic offering evidence based mental health treatment for children who have suffered trauma due to abuse and neglect. Community education is aimed at increasing awareness of child maltreatment, prevention of exposure to violence, and long term consequences of child maltreatment.  For further information contact: Lori D. Children's Advocacy Center was begun to alleviate the trauma to abused children of having to go from place to place) i.e. hospital, police station, child welfare etc.) and repeat themselves over and over. The CAC is set in a homely environment and the resources come to the child. Therapy is also available at the home through the local mental health system. Abuse education and coordination of services are part of the program also.

With the help of benevolent community conscious citizens and our legislators, the Center for Child Protection at Sunbury Community Hospital was started 2-3 years ago. The main thrust of the Center is to evaluate children via a videotaped psychosocial interview and via a physical examination as well as a colposcopic exam. We have not ventured into the therapeutic aspect of this problem.

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has developed one of the nation's most comprehensive programs to address the critical issues of child abuse, neglect and placement in foster care. Safe Place: The Center for Child Protection and Health provides comprehensive, accessible, high quality health care needed to address the medical and psychosocial needs of children at risk. Safe Place is staffed by an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers and other hospital personnel.

Active collaboration with the city of Philadelphia, child advocacy centers in our five county region, including our co-located medical services in Philadelphia, and the respective child protection services, law enforcement and private agencies, facilitates improved access to these specialized victim services, and in the provision of evidence-based models of treatment to children who have experienced trauma, including children placed in foster care. Our newest clinical service, the Fostering Health Program provides comprehensive medical, behavioral, and developmental assessments to children entering foster care in Philadelphia.

The faculty members have been involved in research, education and advocacy at the regional and national levels to advance clinical care, health services, public policy and prevention. The Safe Place fellowship training program in child abuse pediatrics provides a high caliber pipeline of the next generation of child abuse pediatrics physicians to innovate and address the complex challenges in reducing the ultimately preventing child maltreatment and its intergenerational cycle.
