Section on Epidemiology

The Section on Epidemiology (SOEp), founded in 1988, is dedicated to educating the general pediatrician and pediatric subspecialist on the basic principles of epidemiology and its relation to pediatrics and its various disciplines. The section consults to the AAP Board of Directors and works with various AAP committees, sections and task forces to provide methodological support and expertise in epidemiology and evidence-based medicine.

The SOEp's role in consulting to the Board and working with other Academy bodies to provide methodologic expertise has grown substantially. The SOEp has liaison relationships with the Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS) Network, the Steering Committee on Quality Improvement and Management (SCOQIM), and each of the SCOQIM's clinical practice guideline development subcommittees. Section members also help the Academy develop evidence-based policy statements and guidelines.

Section membership is open to all Fellows and Residents of the Academy with an interest in epidemiology. The section currently has over 500 members and affiliate members.

The SOEp Executive Committee holds its organizational meetings and hosts educational programs at the Academy's annual meetings. Topics addressed at past educational programs have included clinical practice guideline development, outcomes research, controversies in maternal-fetal medicine, emerging problems in community pediatrics, critical appraisal of the literature, and putting prevention into practice.

The section produces a biannual newsletter, Epi News, and maintains a database of experts in epidemiology and evidence-based medicine. The SOEp also has liaisonships with the Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Research and the AAP Section on Community Pediatrics Prevention and Public Health Special Interest Group, and has a new liaison from the Section of Residents.
