Section on Genetics and Birth Defects

Mission

The Section on Genetics and Birth Defects (SOGBD) is the Academy home for AAP Fellows who are interested in pediatric genetics. The principal mission and activities of the section include:

  • Education of primary care pediatricians (both those in practice and those in training) regarding the role of genetics in their practice and the role of genetics in children's health and disease.
  • Development of genetics-related educational programming for the annual AAP National Conference and Exhibition.
  • Development of programs and projects which will improve the care of infants, children, and adolescents with genetic disorders or birth defects.
  • Close collaboration with the AAP Committee on Genetics to assist in the development of AAP policy regarding genetics issues.
  • Support for genetics-related advocacy efforts at the federal, state, and local level.
  • Advocacy for adequate reimbursement of pediatric subspecialists, as well as adequate reimbursement for case management of children with special healthcare needs.

SOGBD Young Investigator Research Grant

The SOGBD Young Investigator Research Grant is awarded for basic or clinical research by promising young investigators in the area of genetics and birth defects. Funding permitted, the grant provides $20,000 annually to a single winning applicant.

Applicants must be enrolled in a genetics or birth defects training program or have completed training within 3 years of the application deadline. Additionally, applicants must be a post-residency fellow, candidate fellow, or full fellow of the AAP in good standing.

Membership

The Section on Genetics and Birth Defects accepts members from within the following AAP membership categories: Fellows, Specialty Fellows, Post Residency Training Fellows, Honorary Fellows, Life Fellows, Emeritus Fellows, Dual Fellows, and Candidate Fellows. Section members must be actively involved in some aspect of the study of genetic disorders in infants, children, or adolescents and interested in contributing toward the objectives of the Section. The AAP section application form is available here. SOGBD annual dues are $25.
