A major launch of “after hours” call centers took place in the 1990’s and it is now believed that nearly 30% of pediatric care is provided via the electronic visits among which telephone care is primary. A group of concerned AAP members formed a special interest group and began discussing the growing trend in telephone medicine; committed to improving the organization, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of pediatric care through telephone management protocols and technologies. The group petitioned the Academy for provisional section status in 1998 and began with 48 charter members under the leadership of Steven Poole. In 2002 the section was granted full section status. In 2008, the name and scope of the Section were extended to encompass telehealth care.
