Welcome to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) resident and fellow homepage! The Section on Medical Students, Residents and Fellowship Trainees (SOMSRFT) is the largest section in the AAP with more than 14,000 members. As a result, we have a strong voice for pediatric trainees and our patients. We hope our web page serves as a centralized resource for our members to find educational materials, leadership opportunities, advocacy information, and funding opportunities. I encourage you to become involved in our section!
Currently, 98% of pediatric residency programs fund AAP membership for their residents. This funding pays for residents to receive Pediatrics, Red Book, PediaLink, PREP, Peds in Review, and access PediaLink. Nationally, we are led by a Chair, Vice-chair, and Secretary who lead an Executive Committee comprised of District Coordinators and Assistant District Coordinators elected annually to represent each of the Academy's ten national districts. In addition, every residency program designates Program Delegates to represent their organization. The SOMSRFT also has Liaisons to more than 40 other sections within the Academy and outside organizations. If you are interested in serving in any of these capacities, please see the open leadership position page of our web site.
In addition to providing resources to our members, SOMSRFT also plays a strong role in child advocacy. We created our first national advocacy campaign in 2005 and have been building momentum ever since. Our current campaign is FACE Poverty, which stands for Food Security, Access, Community and Education. We hope you will join our efforts in some capacity to help improve the health of our nation’s children whether that be at your home institution, community, state or federal level. While our Section unites around a common advocacy topic, we recognize that you may have your own advocacy interests. To that end, the AAP offers CATCH grants, Dyson Awards and other support to enable your own local advocacy work.
We invite you to network with other residents, medical students, and fellowship trainees at the AAP’s National Conference and Exhibition (NCE). The 2015 conference will be held in Washington, DC, from October 24-27. The SOMSRFT Annual Assembly will consist of a full-day meeting for residents, medical students, and fellowship trainees on Saturday, October 24th including district lunches to meet people from your region. Please check out our NCE page for future highlights and information for attendees. We hope to see you in Washington, DC!
It is exciting to report that the Academy approved medical student full national membership in 2014 and our medical student subcommittee continues to expand the breadth of resources available for medical students nationally. Through the great work of the subcommittee our medical student involvement has increased to record numbers by providing them with access to our resources, their own student newsletter, and a guide to becoming a pediatrician. Key future directions for our section are to better engage fellows with a focus on their post-residency needs, increase leadership opportunities within the various councils, committees and sections of the Academy, and pilot our national mentorship program.
We are excited to continue to develop new resources and welcome your input for ways to improve your experience with the AAP. I can personally attest to the support and enthusiasm the AAP President, Board of Directors and Executive Committee have for our section. With their commitment we plan to continue to achieve our ambitious goals for the section. I hope you are intrigued and inspired by what you find as you browse the AAP web site and that you use us as your professional home now and throughout your career. If you would like to ask questions, provide feedback, or learn how to become more involved, feel free to contact either your local SOMSRFT leaders or our executive board directly.
Thank you for visiting and welcome to SOMSRFT and the AAP!
