Dear Program Delegate:

Welcome to a leadership position in the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Medical Students, Residents, and Fellowship Trainees (SOMSRFT)!

It is with great pleasure that I congratulate you on your position as program delegate. This role provides a wonderful opportunity for you to enhance your understanding of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), strengthen your leadership skills and build networking connections that will influence many facets of your life for years to come.

The purpose of the AAP Section on Medical Students, Residents, and Fellowship Trainees is to advocate for our section members, develop leadership within our section, and educate our members to effectively advocate for healthy children. With over 13,000 members, the SOMSRFT is the largest of approximately 50 sections in the AAP. So, our members have a tremendous voice within the Academy.

The leadership of the section is modeled after that of the Academy itself. Our executive committee consists of a Chair, Vice-Chair, Immediate Past-Chair and Secretary. We also have a District Coordinator (DC) and Assistant District Coordinator (ADC) from each of the ten districts around the country. Lastly, we have more than twenty SOMSRFT Liaisons to other sections, committees, and organizations both within and beyond the Academy.

Our section’s executive committee must fully understand the needs of our members to best work for them. Furthermore, the success of our section activities depends most heavily on the strength, determination, and efforts of our individual members. We must have grass roots support to establish clear and effective communication between our greater than 13,000 members and the elected executive committee. As program delegate, you will act as that direct link between residents within your program and the SOMSRFT executive committee. Therefore, you should be the individual that all residents from your program identify as a resource for information regarding the Academy. Furthermore, you are the conduit to express concerns from the residents at your program to the section’s executive committee.

To help you succeed at your job, we have compiled a number of useful resources that should help you achieve your goals and fulfill your responsibilities. Please familiarize yourself with the following resources, and especially review the Delegate Handbook carefully:

Delegate Handbook
Intro to AAP PowerPoint
Program Delegate Annual Calendar
AAP Strategic Plan
